The capital of Salzburg Austria lies in the Salzburger Becken on the northern border of the Austrian Alps. It is surrounded by the Kapuziner-Mountain, the Monk-Mountain and the Gais-Mountain There are a few districts that have a different feel to them, but it is this city historic (Altstadt) or the (Old Town) that is well worth a visit.
There is something extremely southern about the town with an air of Florence or Venice. The Baroque architecture gives the city a graceful appeal. Narrow old streets lead into squares with Gothic churches and monasteries and sculptured fountains. Furthermore, located here are many inspiring mansions and Renaissance palaces that reign over stunning parks and gardens. It is easy to visualize how the drama and lyricism of these ancient stones. This exceptional mixture of Italian and Germanic had a great influence on the music of one of the world's greatest composers.
In the western part of the Old Town, there is the (Kollegienkirche) the house in which Mozart was born. The two renowned festival halls (Festspielhauser) and the so-called (Pferdeschwemme) was once a spot where horses could drink water. The Getreidegasse is one of the most high-priced streets and at the west-end you can find the Church of St. Blasius. The Getreidegasse has always been the Linzergasses elegant equal, but the Linzergasse is on the other side of the river Salzach. It is one of the main traffic routes, which gives the districts on the right of the river access to the city heading west. It is also one of the roads for traveling to Linz and Vienna.
