Salamanca situated in the South-west corner of Castile and Leon on the borders with extremadura
and Portugal, Lying on Spain's Northern Plateau meseta, it forms part of the Duero river system
where Paleozonic soils, poorly suited to farming, have resulted in a landscape of pastures,
dotted with trees and bushy undergrowth.
Sitting in the sun sipping red wine in Salamanca's attractive Plaza Mejor (main square) offers
the best of the Spanish city. In the sunshine the plaza glows gold, and is perhaps the most
striking square in all of Spain. But the Plaza Mejor, with its stunning Baroque architecture,
is just the beginning of the city's charms.
As a University town, it attracts students from all over the world. Not only for it's
high-class, structurally stunning university, but also for the language schools which dot the
city. Salamantinas have a reputation for speaking the purest, clearest form of Castilian
(Spanish), making the city the number-one target for students wishing to study the language.
Add a town full of foreigners to the zealous nature of the Spanish natives, and anyone
visiting the city is sure to have a great time.
