Pamplona is situated in the Navarre region of Spain and is also the capital of the region. Vitoria international Airport is by far the closest international airport and is approximately 100 km from the city.
It is well-known for the custom of the running of the bulls which takes place between the 6th and 14th of July every year. The town of Navarre is where the tourist's flock in early July each year for the Running of the Bulls officially La Fiesta Del Fermin. The festival is in honor of the city's patron saint. Ernest Hemingway in his novel (The Sun Also Rises') helped to make this location world famous. And it has developed into Spain's most popular attraction ever since. A bust of Hemingway stands outside Pamplona's bullring where the 8-day festival of dancing and dashing through the streets ahead of rampaging bulls, and drinking begin.
The easily reached capital of the Navarra region is a good starting point for the run with the bulls, if that's what takes your fancy. Alternatively, head along (El Camino de Santiago) as it winds south away from the city into the Navarra wine region. The peaks of the Pyrenees and Picos mountain ranges melt into the great central plains that make up Spain's most charming landscape. Be sure to have an overnight stay in Olite. This refreshingly tourist-free village is the wine capital of the region. Stuffed with Gothic and Romanesque churches east of Olite the hilltop village of Ujue offers a dramatic overview of the entire southern Navarra region, particularly from the vantage point of the Gothic Santa Maria church.
