Oviedo, the region's capital, is an industrial city, with a lively cultural
life. It is the home of some of Spain's most significant pre-Romaic
ruins, the University of Oviedo, the Prince of Asturias Awards,
and the gothic Cathedral of San Salvador. Its central position
is perfect for exploring the rest of Asturias. Within a half
hour in each direction you're either on a beach or in the
mountains.Car Hire
Oviedo is a great way to explore.
Away from the dust-flying heat of southern Spain, Asturias offers a completely different
viewpoint of everything that is Spanish. The region has as many sunny, sandy beaches as it does
snowy, rugged mountain, which makes it perfect for the outdoor enthusiast or anyone who
appreciates stunning landscape. As one of the countries less frequently visited regions, it is
probably one of Spain's best-kept secrets.
The nightlife in the city keeps pace with typical Spanish marcha, e.g., don't even think
about going home until at least, 4 am. If you're in the frame of mind for something a little
more modest, you may wish to head in the direction of the northern outskirts of the casco
antiguo along Calle Jovellanos where there are several places with smaller, pub-like
atmospheres. Another really popular Asturian way to pass the night is to hit up the sidrerias
on Calle Gascona. And are great places for chatting with friends, especially when the terrazas
are open.
