Merida located 44 miles South of Caceres and 35 miles East of Badajoz. Located at the crossroads of the Roman roads linking (Toledo) (Lisbon) (Salamanca) and (Seville). At one time it was the capital of Lusitania, and Lusitania is the Latin name for ancient Portugal which incorporated parts of south western Spain. The city was impressive in Iberia ranking it as a city of major significance in the Roman Empire. People once called it a miniature Rome with monuments, and temples make it a site of some of the most excellent Roman ruins in Spain. And as such it is the tourist capital of Extremadura.
This district is constituted of two provinces Caceres and Badajoz. And without doubt its worth a visit thanks to its fantastic Roman ruins. The city was one of the most significant cities in the whole Roman Empire. After-wards for many years it was the border between Moorish and Christian Spain. Following the recon quest it arrived in a new splendor with the discovery of America when it was the home of several famous conquerors.
This region has yet not been exposed to mass tourism, but it has plenty to offer if you are looking for something off the beaten track. The locals still have original well-liked customs and traditions. With characteristic dresses, great ceramics, metal works and embroideries, Many restaurants and bars offer exceptional food the likes of (trout) (game) (sausages) (cheeses) and excellent wines.
