Mahon Menorca's capital town is an inevitable port of call for people arriving on the island. Most people head for the string of restaurants and cafes that line the port. The town itself is sedate and traditional featuring typical Georgian townhouses bearing evidence to the British occupation of former days.
The attractions of the Town Hall (Casa Consistorial) the Church of (Santa Maria) and the Church of (San Francisco) is a must see. There is a first-class road that links the older town of Ciudadela the previous capital on the opposite side Menorca island. Its Cathedral partly dating from the 14th century and the city boasts quite a few stylish Palacios and medieval churches. It has been the capital since the British moved it from Ciutadella in 1721. The motivation being the harbor, at 5 km long and over 1 km at its widest point and 20-30mtrs deep. It is one of the biggest natural harbor in the world together with its position in the Mediterranean and Spain. It has made it a deliberate stronghold for numerous nations. The port itself is peaceful by day and buzzing by night the bars and restaurants along the port-side come alive at night you can spend many hours down in the port watching the ships, admiring the view, enjoying the hospitality of the restaurants, or just sat taking in the atmosphere.
