Funchal the capital of Madeira. Madeira is situated 978 km from Lisbon, 600 km from the coast of
Morocco, and 443 km from the Canary Islands. It has a pleasant climate all year round, but summer comes
early and gardens flourish with exotic blossoms. The nightlife is very color full to, by way of trendy
pavement cafes and live-music bars. You can get to the islands of Madeira by sea or by air. Madeira
International Airport is situated in Santa Cruz and is 20 minutes from Funchal. Because cruising ships
frequently visit the port of Funchal, it serves as a doorway to the islands, as well as a departure point
to other destinations.
Funchal is a delightful town situated on an impressive bay against a background of green mountains.
Twisting cobbled streets meander amid graceful colonial-style buildings, nestling into the shelter of the
verdant hillside. Funchal's historic center overlooks the port and features some fine government buildings
and stately 18th-century mansions. Its natural port attracted early settlers in the 15th century.
Much of the island is assigned as a conservation area where rare flowers cover the island like a
green blanket. Orchids, bougainvillaea, lilies, hydrangeas, magnolias, jacarandas and azaleas bloom
naturally all through the year, and delight the eye at every turn.
