This is the largest town on Gran Canaria and has a distinctly big-city feel. It is located on the northeastern tip of Gran Canaria and has begun swallowing up the small island of La Isleta. The city hugs the coast up a series of long boulevards to the bustling Santa Catalina and Puerto de la Luz.
The Cathedral de Santa Ana is the city's main place of worship and took 350 years to build and complete. Nearby is the Museo Diocesano set on two levels around the Patio de los Naranjos. It contains the standard collection of religious art and memorabilia, including old manuscripts and wooden sculptures.
Gran Canaria is part of Spain's Canary Islands off the northern coast of Africa. The island has great beaches with very modern amenities. It is a good escape from the cold of the winters of Europe. Las Palmas is the major city crowning the island of high cliffs to the north and extensive beaches to the south. And offers sun, sea and a special historical legacy. Mild temperatures throughout the year make for a pleasant and diverse city. The mixture of the original Guanche culture from its colonial past and the fact that it is only 90 miles from the coast of Africa create a unique quality resulting from the mix of Europe, America and Africa influences.
