Located on the Atlantic coast in the northwest corner of Spain. (La Coruna airport) is 7 km from the city the next nearest airport is (Santiago de Compostea airport) which is approximately 55 km from the city. The city is situated on a small peninsula at the mouth of the estuary. One of the distinct parts of the city is (La Ciudad Vieja) the Old City. It is located on the highest part of the peninsula initially surrounded by city walls. Here you will find narrow streets of flagstones, plazas, churches, and houses characteristic of the area. (El Istmo) the (Isthmus) this area was built in the 19th century. Nearby you will find the fish market (El Ensanche). The most-recent part and it occupies the mainland part of the city.
The city is well preserved with a substantial heritage of monuments and old buildings among which are Romanesque churches and the Roman lighthouse. Its most original feature is the disguise on its houses, which are totally covered by mirador windows.
The old center contains most of the historical monuments built before the 19th century with buildings dating back from the Modernist period. Picasso lived in the city through that time and there are lots of reminders of the great painter. The greatest event in the history of the city occurred in 1588 when (Philip II ) with the unbeatable Armada sailed from here to England. Only half the ships made it back to Spain the following year Sir Francis Drake and his ships attacked the port in retaliation.
