The city of La Coruña is located on the Atlantic coast in the northwest corner of Spain. The city is situated on a small peninsula at the mouth of the La Coruna estuary. There are three distinct parts of the city: La Ciudad Vieja, the Old City, on the highest part of the peninsula, initially surrounded by city walls. Here you will find narrow streets of flagstones, plazas, churches, "casonas", houses characteristic of the area, El Istmo, the Isthmus, this area was built in the 19th century, here you will find the fish market; El Ensanche, the most recent part and it occupies the mainland part of the city. The city has lovely beaches, the Riazor and the Orzan.

The city has preserved a substantial heritage of monuments and old buildings, among which are Romanesque churches and Roman lighthouse. Its most original feature is the characteristic disguise on its houses, which are totally covered by mirador windows.

The old center contains most of the historical monuments built before the 19th century, and buildings dating from the Modernist period. Picasso lived in the city through that time and there are lots of reminders of the great painter. The greatest event in the history of the city occurred in 1588, when Philip II Unbeatable Armada sailed from here to England. Only half the ships made it back to Spain. The following year, Sir Francis Drake and his ships attacked the port in retaliation.
