Huelva province stretches between Seville and Portugal. And is located only 25km from the Portuguese border the actual city dates back some 3000 years when it was named Onuba. Later, it prospered under the Carthaginians and Romans, who used it as a base for mining. The average temperature is somewhat milder than other parts due to the strong Atlantic wind and this provides perfect conditions for windsurfing and surf-boarders.
The City is a Mecca for those interested in Christopher Columbus. There are a number of important tourist attractions regarding the well-known explorer located here. For instance, the (La Rabida Monastery) at the (Muelle de las Carabelas) where a modern museum houses replicas of the Columbus ships. At the nearby village of (Palos de la Frontera) is the actual embarkation point of the voyage with the old well from where the fresh water was taken aboard.
Stroll around the impressive barrio Reina Victoria Alonso or visit the Alonso Sanchez Park. The views are very attractive for the city. Other points of interest in the city comprise of the Muelle del Tinto docks, built at the beginning of the century to load mineral exports.
