Gijon city and harbour, in northwestern Spain, in the Asturias Region, on the Bay of Biscay, it is a modern city with every single facility required. The city is thought to be the ancient Roman town of Gigia. The Moors captured it in the early 8th century; and it was one of the first cities to be reconquered by Christian forces in 1395. During the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939, it was destroyed by fire. The capture of the city by the Nationalists in October 1937 completed the fighting in northwestern Spain.
