Gijon city and harbor in north-west in the Asturias Region is on the Bay of Biscay. It is a modern city with every single facility required. With an extensive variety of hotels, restaurants and shopping facilities, which are situated primarily in the city center, one of the most significant tourist attractions is the San Lorenzo Beach, with a three mile-long promenade.
The city is thought to be the ancient Roman town of Gigia. The Moors captured it in the early 8th century, and it was one of the first cities to be conquered again by the Christian forces in 1395. During the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 it was destroyed by fire. The capture of the city by the Nationalists in October 1937 completed the fighting in north-west.
There are plenty of distinctive small towns around the city with lush valleys, beautiful meadows. Both in the center and the outskirts you can find spots to relax the most popular being Isabel la Catolica Park or Monte de Deva. Festivities take place all through the year as (Antroxu) (Semana Negra) and (International Film Festival) (Day of Asturias) (Fiestas de Begona) and the International Trade Fair of Asturias.
