Estartit in the Spanish region of Catalonia at the northern end of the Costa Brava, this is a small and very attractive family resort, nestling at the foot of the striking Montgri mountain range and presided over by a 13th century castle. Estartit's location, sandwiched between the mountains and the plain of the River Ter, and has a stunning rocky shoreline together with one of the longest sandy beaches on the Costa Brava.
The town is in fact called L'Estartit but is usually referred to as purely Estartit. The resort is 60 km south of the French border and only 40 km from the nearby international airport at Gerona. This once sleepy fishing village has turned out to be a well-liked holiday destination with Spaniards and international tourists, It appeals predominantly to families with young children, being a somewhat quiet and tranquil resort.
One of its most important resources is the fact that it overlooks the beautiful Medes Islands, an archipelago of seven islands, which together make up one of the most significant nature and marine reserves in the western Mediterranean. The Medes, one and a half km off the beach, have been protected since 1990.The effect has been the progress of a varied and rich marine life of thousands of diverse species, attracting scuba divers from around the world.
