El Hierro is a rural island for the most part unscathed by tourism, and the green farmland separated by rough stonewalls. The capital is Valverde, the only Canaries capital not on the coast, the attractive, red-roofed town of about 1600. The walking is good on the island, and you can pass through hamlets like Echedo, in the heart of wine growing region, or the cheese producing village of Isora. You can fly to the island from Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and there are also frequent ferries.
The roads wind forever up through the clouds and feature numerous panoramic views of the sea far below, along with the rare sight of an unsightly, industrialized banana plantation. This island is a good place in which to unwind. La Restinga, a fishing village at the southern tip is a 45-minute drive from Valverde. This blackened lump of lava, spewed out of the sea off the African coast by a rising volcano, was at the most westerly point of the known world. It was from this point east that geographical distances were measured. In actual fact, the Greenwich Meridian passes through it. Today, few people outside the Canary Islands have even heard of El Hierro.
